A medical emergency abroad, a cancelled flight or lost bags can cost far more than the trip itself. Travel insurance is cheap compared to any of them.

The basics

  • Emergency medical cover, including hospital stays and sometimes evacuation home.
  • Trip cancellation or interruption if you can’t travel or have to come back early for a listed reason.
  • Baggage and belongings that are lost, stolen or delayed.
  • Some destinations require proof of medical cover for entry or a visa.

Where people get caught

  • Cancellation is only covered for the reasons the policy lists.
  • Pre-existing conditions may be excluded unless declared and accepted.
  • Adventure activities like diving or climbing may not be covered.
  • Once a storm is named, it can count as a known event, and cover bought afterwards may not apply to it.
  • Credit card travel cover usually has low limits and conditions.
  • Medical bills abroad can be very high.

Do this now

Check the medical limit, whether evacuation is included and what counts as a valid cancellation reason. Buy as soon as you book, because some cover depends on how soon you buy.
