Does travel insurance cover hurricane cancellations?

Travel Storm & hurricane Caribbean (15 countries)

Short answer

Sometimes, but not once the storm has a name. Most policies treat a named storm as a known event, so cover bought after it is named usually will not pay for that trip.

What is usually covered

  • Cancelling or cutting short a trip when a storm affects your destination, if you bought before it was named.
  • Extra accommodation and meals if you are delayed by a storm, on policies that include it.
  • Some policies add cancel for any reason cover at a higher price.

What is usually left out

  • Storms that were already named when you bought the policy.
  • Cancelling because you are nervous but no warning has been issued, on standard cover.
  • Costs the airline or hotel already refunds you.
  • Trips booked outside the dates covered by the policy.

What to ask your agent

  • What counts as a covered storm, and when does cover start?
  • What happens if the storm is named after I buy the policy?
  • Does it cover extra nights if flights are cancelled?
  • Is cancel-for-any-reason cover available, and what percentage does it pay back?

Do this now

Buy trip cover as soon as you book, not the week before you travel. That is the single biggest thing that decides whether a storm is covered.
