What is strikes, riots and civil commotion cover?

Short answer

It is the cover that pays if your property is damaged during unrest. In many markets it is not part of a standard property policy and is added separately, often as "SRCC". Check for it before there is any trouble.

What is usually covered

  • Damage to the building and its contents during a riot, strike or civil commotion, where the cover is included.
  • Damage from looting or vandalism that happens during the event.
  • Some policies include loss of income while the business cannot operate, if business interruption is added.

What is usually left out

  • War, invasion and terrorism are often excluded or covered under a different section.
  • Government action, such as seizure or demolition by authorities.
  • Losses not tied to physical damage, such as customers staying away.
  • Events covered by a separate political-violence policy that you do not have.

What to ask your agent

  • Is SRCC cover included in my policy, or sold as an add-on?
  • Does it apply to my stock, equipment and the building?
  • Does business interruption follow SRCC damage?
  • Is there a waiting period or a separate deductible for riot damage?

Do this now

Find "riot", "strike" or "civil commotion" in your policy. If it is not there, ask your agent how much adding it would cost.
